Firewood logs, water content
Firewood is cut and split oven-ready fuel wood used in household wood burning appliances like stoves, fireplaces and central heating systems. By and large, firewood is from 150mm to 1 000 mm
long.
The EN 14961-5 norm "Solid biofuels - Fuel specifications and classes - Part 5: Firewood for non-industrial use" determines the fuel quality classes and specifications of firewood for non industrial
use.
Firewood is produced from the following raw materials:
- whole trees without roots;
- chemically untreated wood residues;
- stem wood;
- logging residues (tree top).
Is not included in the scope of the norm EN 14961-4 :
- Demolition wood, defined as "used wood arising from demolition of buildings or civil engineering installations" (FprEN 14588:2010,4.52).
Firewood moisture content, determined with the oven drying method according to the norm EN 14774, is to be equal or inferior to 20%, 25% or 35% on its wet mass depending on the classes of firewood and not less 12% on wet basis.
As far as moisture on dry basis is concerned, it should be equal or inferior to 25%, 33% or 54% depending on the classes of firewood and not less than 13,64% on dry basis.
