Wood species and moisture content

Based on the oven dry method, the calibration of the Humitest moisture meters for different wood species depends on the technology of wood.

Timber moisture testers

Some Humitest moisture testers are calibrated for wood from 6 to 8% on dry wood to fibre saturation* (30% on wet wood, that is to say 23% on dry wood).

Wood species corresponding to the standard calibration (A)
Afara ; Ash, European; Ash, Japanese; Balsa; Banga Wanga; Birch, Yellow; Bosquiea; Boxwood, Maracaibo; Cypress, E African ; Dahoma A; Fir, Grand ; Gum, American Red; Gum, Spotted; Gurjun; Kapur; Karri; Kuroka; Maple, Pacific; Maple, Rock; Maple, Sugar; Myrtle, Tasmanian; Oak, American Red; Oak, American White; Oak, European; Oak, Japanese; Padang; Panga Panga; Pine, Lodgepole; Pine, Scots; Pine, Yellow; Poplar, Black; Pterygota, African; Redwood, Baltic (European); Rosewood, Indian; Sen; Sterculia, Brown; Tallowwood; Walnut, American.

When measuring one of the wood species listed hereafter, the user of the Humitest Timb moisture meter selects the calibration corresponding to the measured wood species thanks to the calibration table for wood species. With the Humitest Mini, Survey et MMS moisture meters, the user amends himself the measured water content refering to the calibration corresponding to the wood specie he lmeasures.

Versatile wood moisture meters

With some Humitest moisture meters, the customer specifies when he orders its moisture tester if he wants the display of the water content on dry mass or on dry weight. The list of the calibrations that follows is regularly enriched. Please do not hesitate to contact Domosystem if the wood species to be measured does not appear in it.

* Above fibre saturation point, the wood cells contain water up to 50% on wet mass (freshly cut wood).

Products

Humitest for round timber

With its hammer probe, this moisture meter allows to measure water content and temperature of billets, logs or blocks, even freshly cut.

Humitest Timb

This timber moisture tester is designed for measuring framework, sawn lumber, slicing wood as well as wood panels.

Humitest for wood, straw and hay

With its hammer probe or special probes, this moisture meter allows to measure water content of round wood, split logs, wood chips, sawdust, pellets, hay, straw and cellulose bales.

Fibre saturation point

When free water has evaporated from the wood cell lumina, water bound to wood cell walls remains.
The corresponding equilibrium moisture content is approximately 30% in most wood species and is called the "fibre saturation point" or FSP.
